I scanned the Great White Egret from Kenneth Newman's "Birds of Southern Africa", imported the scan into Corel Draw, manually traced the scan, then deleted the scan leaving only the trace, enlarged the trace to 1m wide and printed it onto a number of A4 sheets which I then sellotaped together as a template for the 6mm round bar. This one required plenty of muscle-work to bend the round bar into the correct shape. I then traced the round bar shape onto a galvanized tin sheet and cut out the pieces. Next was the stand with a short piece of copper tubing bound to the top. Into the copper pipe a short length of steel bar fitted snugly to form an efficient low-resistance pivot. The tin body parts were then painted with undercoat and oil paint and attached to the 'bird' frame with short lengths of copper wire. The Egret now flies constantly into wind on top of the container in my garden.
